Virtual world for pre-teens

December 19th, 2007 by sarah

Source: Sydney Morning Herald ()

AS AN adaptable and moderately well-travelled avatar, I’m not
remotely fazed about being reborn as a portly, lime-green penguin
named Bonbon99. Nor am I apprehensive about strapping a
turbo-thrust thingo to my back and launching myself across the
South Pole in search of adventure.

What does alarm me, as I negotiate my first hour of playtime in
the virtual ice wonderland of Club Penguin (www.clubpenguin.com), is what’s
going on simultaneously in the real world.

Perched on my knee is my fiveyear- old boy in a state of
escalating agitation. When a shower of gold coins suddenly appears
around Bonbon99’s ears, he begins shrieking at the top of his tiny
lungs: “GET THE MONEY!” Grown-ups would never be so crass - not out
loud anyway - but you can bet your pinkfur snow jacket that
something fundamentally similar was flashing through the minds of
Disney executives in the months leading up to their acquisition of
Club Penguin in August.

With a claimed 700,000-plus youngsters paying $US57.95 ($A66)
for a 12-month subscription, the deal is expected to be worth
$US700 million within two years.

Clearly, social networking for children is expected to be just
as big - and as lucrative - as websites such as Facebook and
MySpace.

My son is just outside Club Penguin’s 6 to 14 target
demographic.

Rather more creepily, I’m at least 30 years older than the other
penguins waddling about the cyber tundra, and no one is questioning
my right to mingle, message, play games and shop, shop, shop.

The currency here is strictly virtual: gold coins accumulate as
points when you play the various games. Then you spend them on a
pink-fur snow jacket (600 coins) or innumerable other pointless
consumer accessories to adorn your penguin avatar and its
igloo.

HAPPILY, predatory adults would appear to have less leeway at
Club Penguin than on the internet at large. moderator is online
at all times and players are encouraged to block or report suspect
penguins …

The fumble in the jungle: What will now happen with Cerys and Mark?

The fumble in the jungle: What will now happen with Cerys and Marc?

The letter was brief but artfully constructed.

It was nicely old-fashioned, even chivalric in tone, with that dash of high drama requisite in any correspondence between star-crossed lovers.

“There are many problems in London and I’ve had to go back to try and sort them out - but I may well return to greet you when you come out, if that is your wish. Marc.”

While Marc Bannerman did not spell out who or what were the “many problems” referred to in his letter to Cerys Matthews - which was taken into the camp on his behalf - we can safely surmise they concern his estranged girlfriend, Sarah Matravers.

Scroll down for more…

Lovestruck: Marc Bannerman and Cerys Matthews get cosy on I’m A Celebrity. . .

Miss Matravers’ first thought as she looked at her TV set was one of disbelief.

Surely what appeared to be happening could not be.

Her boyfriend of two years, with whom she lived and was trying for a family, had embarked on a full-blown flirtation with 38-year-old singer Cerys Matthews.

Cheeky: is Cerys trying to show Marc just what he’s missing?

Worse, it was happening in front of the cameras, a fumble in the jungle in full view of millions of viewers of the ITV reality show, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

What a humiliation for Miss Matravers.

And what a bonus for the programme makers.

Bannerman and Miss Matthews were gazing into each other’s eyes over the camp fire, having meaningful conversations.

She made a point of leaning across his hammock like a femme fatale; they snuggled up together to ‘watch the stars’.

Such was the attraction between them that one of their campmates described it as “the greatest romance since Romeo and Juliet”.

Miss Matravers initial was to fight for her man, to go to Australia to reclaim him for herself.

Hampton Around the Town

HAMPTON — The Hampton Beach fire station is not only lead free but now it’s mold free.

Fire Chief Hank Lipe told selectmen this week mold inside the station caused by the flooding in April was successfully removed.

“The mold remediation project is now 100 percent complete,” Lipe said.

The department previously removed hazardous lead paint in the station this summer. The town was forced to remove the paint or close the century old station by the state’s Department of Labor, which discovered the paint in the ceilings of the bays last year during a routine inspection.

“The building I’m happy to report is mold free and lead free,” Lipe said.

Tasers: the next generation

December 14th, 2007 by sarah

The Taser is going wireless.

Until now, the electric-shock gun consisted of two barbed darts attached to wires that shoot out and strike the victim, immobilizing the person with 50,000 volts of electricity, causing severe pain and intense muscle contraction.

But the wires could only extend a few metres. With the new "extended range electronic projectile," or XREP, the Taser has been turned into a kind of self-contained shotgun shell and can be fired, wire-free, from a standard shotgun, which police typically have in their arsenal already.

The first electrode hooks on to the target, the second electrode falls and makes contact elsewhere on the body, completing the circuit and activating the shock. It can blast someone as far as 30 metres away, and, unlike the current stun guns, whose shock lasts five seconds, the XREP lasts 20 seconds, enough time to "take the offender into custody without risking injury to officers."

Taser International spokesperson Steve Tuttle says the XREP would be perfect in a standoff. "Here’s someone you just don’t want to get anywhere near," he says.

The XREP is one of two major new applications the Scottsdale, Ariz., company is preparing to field test, a prospect that makes Taser’s critics anxious. They say more study is needed of the old products, let alone the new.

Tasers are sparking all sorts of questions and concerns these days.

Like death after Tasing. Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski died after the RCMP Tased him when he’d become agitated after spending 10 hours inside the secure area at the Vancouver airport.

Or questionable Tasing. University of Florida student Andrew Meyer was Tased even though a handful of officers had already piled on top of him after he refused to stop asking former presidential candidate John Kerry questions at the (He’s the one who uttered that now infamous plea that has spawned bumper stickers and T-shirts: …

Cyberathlete Professional League lands sponsorship

December 14th, 2007 by sarah

Source: Charlotte Business Journal ()

The Cyberathlete Professional League has landed a six-figure sponsorship deal with CyberShotsz Inc., a Dallas-based energy drink maker.

Dallas-based Cyberathlete Professional League, formed in 1997, hosts professional video game tournaments.

CyberShotsz will be the primary sponsor of the CPL Extreme Winter Championships event, which is set for Dec. 18-22 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas.

CPL Founder and President Angel Munoz declined to be more specific regarding the value of the sponsorship, but he said that the sponsorship represents a major push by CyberShotsz to be more in the public eye.

"They're coming a long way," Munoz said. "CyberShotsz is the world's first energy drink formulated specifically for videogames."

CyberShotsz is owned by Dallas-area Shotsz Inc., which markets a line of energy beverages that promise the energy and focus of other energy drink makers, without the sugar or as much caffeine. Those who attend the event will get a free bottle of the product, Munoz said. CyberShotsz will soon launch an advertising push as well, he said.

On Dec. 20, the CPL will host a holiday party and poker tournament at the Hyatt, where the public is free to mingle with Dallas-area game developers, some of whom have developed some of the most popular titles in gaming.

The December tournament is arguably the first major gaming competition to be held in the United since The World Series of Videogaming announced it was dissolving due to financial difficulties in the fall.
